22/03/2004 ÿú When I was stationed in Berlin in the 1970s, several of my friends and I were invited to the Afrikakorps Veterans Christmas party where we were feted and treated as guests of honor. Paticularly enjoyable was at the end of the evening when the veterans got up in a circle on the dance floor and began to sing the old songs.

It grows out of my first book, where I encountered the strange fact that the association of Afrika Korps veterans staged an annual game of football (soccer) against a British 8th Army team. By the late 1950s, the aging veterans called off the contest against the (unaging) British conscripts.

The 164th Light Afrika Division is a sub-unit of 5 Kp. Groádeutschland, which serves as an alternate impression for unit members across AG44 for North Africa events. We portray the German Soldiers who fought in the Afrika Korps , commanded by Field Marshall Erwin Rommel in the North African Campaign of WWII.
In October of 2010 I was fortunate to reach several German veterans in Dresden who served in the Afrika Korps . Of particular interest was Rudolph Schneider , ( one of General Rommel's drivers ). Other interesting stories were provided by an Army Nurse Corps veteran , Elsie Perch who served in North Africa and a French female Liaison Officer.
